Carrageenans belong to a family of linear sulfated polysaccharides that are extracted from edible seaweeds. Although, this ingredient has no nutritional value but it is quite useful in the food industry. It is helpful in settling the ice creams, stabilizing the yoghurt, thickening the puree and cream. It does not have its own nutritional value or flavor but it used as a binder or a thickening agent.
It is completely vegan. Hence, vegans can comfortably eat this natural ingredient and the other food items which contain it.
It is an active natural food ingredient which is used in the medicine to treat various illnesses from common cold and cough to serious intestinal problems. It is also helpful in eliminating pain and swelling in any part of the body. There are several reports that its acidic form is also used as a laxative for treating constipation and to heal the peptic ulcers.
